Happy New Year From Jill Saur Fine Art

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

So, if you know me, you know that I'm usually talking about not trying to be perfect because NOTHING IN LIFE IS PERFECT.  On the other hand, I talk about striving for excellence.

Striving for excellence in art is about expressing yourself using your God given talent, having fun while doing it, and discovering how to be able to put the brush down after your last stroke, exhale, and smile while saying, “It is finished”.

In the process of striving for excellence in art, you're going to do some things that you don't like.  You might call them mistakes.  You won't learn how to do what you do like until you allow yourself to get through the things that you don't like!  Allow yourself to make mistakes because it means that your trying something new!  It means that you're experimenting and challenging yourself.  It means that you're not playing it safe.  That's the secret to getting to the smile part of my quote. :)  Trust me, there's nothing like putting your brush down after that last stroke and smiling and saying to yourself, "It Is Finished".

So, cheers to the New Year.  Cheers to trying new things and never ever giving up!  Thanks to all my students who've made this past year a blessed one.  I have the utmost respect and  appreciation for all your thoughtfulness and kindness.

I do what I love and I love what I do and I look forward to bringing in the New Year with each and every one of you! - Jill Saur - Website:   www.JillSaurFineArt.com

"Wherever you go, go with all your heart." - Confucius

I love this quote by Confucius.  It reminds me of my dedicated students who give their all when working on their art!  Please enjoy my students work below!

Getting up and going about each day can either be seen as a chore or preparation for a banquet.  When I'm working on a painting, I can only have the best outcome when I'm going at it with all my heart.

I think this applies to any state of being.  Van Gogh and countless other artists painted when their hearts were happy, sad, and even broken.  They worked through their state of mind and emotions "with all their heart" and they created masterpieces!  Of course they used their knowledge about style, technique and color theory too.  Creating art is about the use of our minds and our hearts and using them to the fullest capacity!

"Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures."  - Henry Ward Beecher

I love that quote!  What a week of beautiful art and humor.  Speaking of humor, see if you can spot one of my students whose quite a bit of fun to be around.  From one-liners to funny stories, my students keep me smiling throughout the week. Thanks!

"I like the encouragement I get from doing new things.  I like to feel scared or challenged in the hope that I can pull it off.  That little bit of fear creates an energy that I can channel into the performance." - Joane Whalley

One of the definitions of performance is to render, or to bring to completion.  It involves execution and implementation.  Gee, that sounds like the painting process!  This quote expresses how I feel about painting and especially how I feel about painting new things!

Here are some of the new paintings by my students from this past week.  What a joy to be surrounded by such lovely, energetic, creative and wonderful people!

"I only hope that we don't lose sight of one thing - that it was all started by a mouse." - Walt Disney

From a mouse to thousands of shows and movies to Walt Disney World!  Big things are born from little packages of ideas that blossom and grow.  Speaking of growth,  I love seeing the growth of my students as they explore and venture into new endeavors!

By the way, WELCOME HOME  MISS L.  We've all been thinking of you and praying for your recovery.  It's so good to see you and have you back this week!  I withhold the names of my students to protect their privacy.  They know who they are!

"It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation." - Herman Melville

Even when my students are looking at a photograph, I encourage them to put their own spin on it or think about how they can make it better.  There's a time to imitate when learning and then there's a time to  determine what your own style is and do your thing. I'm so proud of my students for exploring their imagination and creativity to produce beautiful works of art!

Painting Class Roswell, Ga (What Do You Love?)

WHAT DO YOU LOVE?  I'm talking in the realm of art.  I wrote this back in 2010.  It expresses my lifelong love affair with painting.

For The Love Of Painting  By Jill Saur
I love picking up a blank white canvas.  I love contemplating the possibilities of what will emerge when I let myself go.
I love the musing of which brush I will select, or which brush will select me.  My brushes are like old friends with whom I am very familiar, yet I still find delight in what they are capable of doing.
I love picking up my palette knife. It is the instrument that will facilitate the mixing and dividing of hue, as well as the application of rich, dramatic texture that will bring my paintings to life.
I love opening the jars of paint.  Their rich, lustrous hues remind me of how they’ve impacted my life. The vivid blues speak of my first bicycle, and the shimmering waters of the ocean at dawn.  The golden yellows ignite memories of the sun rising over the great expanse of the Atlantic Ocean.  Painful or pleasing, color is deeply interwoven into every synapse of my being.
I love the way the first stroke of paint glides across the canvas, and I love the way I can feel the texture of that canvas through the vibrations in my brush.

I love stepping back to become an observer, and waiting until the painting reveals what it needs before I proceed.

I love when light and shadow and form begin to emerge from the canvas, and take on a life of their own.

I love what painting teaches me about life, and I love what life teaches me about painting.  I love that I can paint what I feel, and I especially love how I feel when I paint.

I love that the painting experience lightens pain, and gives wings of flight to fettered human limitations.

I love the way painting causes me to look to a source greater than myself for inspiration and guidance.  And, when I get to the end of a painting, I love that I know when I’ve made the final stroke that enables me to say, “It is finished”.

I love knowing that although I cannot sing with my voice, my paintings are like a song that will resonate through the years, even after I’m gone.

HOW WELL DO YOU SEE COLOR?

One of my students shared a Pantone online test with me.  Based on the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test, it shows how well an individual sees color and value changes. There are four lines with boxes of colors.  The first and last box are fixed.  You have to move all the rest of the colors around and put them in the right order to go with the first and last color.

I recommend scrolling the test to the top of your screen where you will only see the first row of colors.  Put a piece of white paper over the boxes below so that you can just concentrate on one line at a time.  After you submit the test, be sure to put your age and gender in the information box.  Have fun!

Painting Classes Roswell, GA

"Every child is an artist, the problem is staying an artist when you grow up." - Pablo Picasso

I have a number of students who are delving into palette knife painting and their doing a great job! I also have a number of students who are doing studies of Vincent Van Gogh paintings.  It's a great study to help in the area of loosening up and showing movements in the painting.

Hope you're all having a great week.  I look forward to seeing more finished works coming up this week.
