TWO GREAT ART TIPS

Thanks go out to two of my students who've shared two great tips with me.  I'm passing them on to you.

1.  SAVE YOUR BRUSHES!  I was getting ready to discard quite a few of my old brushes that were caked with paint from extensive use over the years.  Even though I clean them after each session, time does takes its toll.  Well, a student told me to soak my brushes in Murphy's Oil Soap overnight and it would help remove the old dried paint build up at the base of them.  It worked!!!!  I rescued about fifteen brushes!

Just soak the bristles and a touch of the holder (see photo below).  Don't immerse the wood.  After they've been soaking for twelve hours, rinse them well and clean with Palmolive Dish Detergent or brush cleaner.

2.  ART TOTE BAG:  Another student came to class with this Pittman Field Bag.  This is now made by Jerry's Artarama.  The Masterson Palette fits in a compartment under the bag!!!!  The bag is large enough to accommodate paint, brushes, palette, paper towels and lots of other things.  If you order it, be sure to just order the bag.  There is another price for the bag and a watercolor palette and that's more expensive.

PAINT YOUR OWN GOOD CHEER AND LAUGHTER INTO YOUR WORK

“I do not need to go to the Museum and to see Titian and Velasquez. I have studied my trade in Nature's workshop, and now I know better than I did before I took my little journey, what is above all necessary if one wishes to paint the South. Heavens! what fools all these painters are! They say that Delacroix does not paint the Orient as it is. Only Parisians—Gérôme, etc.—can paint the Orient as it is—is that their claim? It really is a funny thing, this business of painting, out in the wind and the sun. And when the crowd looks over one's shoulder, one simply sets to like mad, as if the devil himself were at one's back, until the canvas is covered. It is precisely in this way that one discovers what everything depends upon. And this is the whole secret.

Van Gogh painted out in the field and did studies before he attempted his final painting. I love how he wrote that an artist introduces something of their own good cheer and laughter into their work. A roomful of students can all paint the same study and no two paintings will look the same because each student is a unique individual.
