Andrew Wyeth, american artist
Andrew Wyeth Painting
Andrew Wyeth – American Master Artist  (1917-2009)

He was the quintessential example of a true American artistic genius. He was Andrew Wyeth, my favorite American Artist.

Andrew’s disciplined artistic journey began as a young boy and his respect for the human spirit never wavered. Andrew Wyeth once said, I search for the realness, the real feeling of a subject, all the texture around it, I always want to see the third dimension of something.  I want to come alive with the object.”  Wyeth's desire was to capture a moment, not a frozen moment, but a fleeting moment.

If you're going to paint from a photograph, it's important to know the difference between a frozen moment and a fleeting moment. It's the fleeting moment that's wrought with feeling!

"The starting point of all achievement is desire." - Napoleon Hill

Desire is the one word that I think of when I look back to my true starting point in wanting to become an artist.  I had a strong desire to express myself through art.  I could envision what I wanted to paint, I just had little idea how to accomplish it.  Thus, the journey began to learn my most magnificent obsession.  Desire was my starting point but it's also the foundation of the compass that keeps me learning and moving forward every artistic day of my life! - Jill Saur

Van Gogh Vase Flowers
Van Gogh Vase With Flowers Painting
Van Gogh"s Use Of Complimentary Colors by Jill Saur

Title:  "Vase With Daisies And Anemones"
Painted In Paris In The Summer Of 1887

This oil on canvas by Van Gogh is rendered with stunning complementary colors (colors that are opposites on the color wheel).  In this case, the opposites are blue and orange, purple and yellow, and red and green.  In color theory, this combination of colors is known as a six tone chord (hexagon).

Van Gogh was a master of color, drawing, and composition.  He knew how to use just the right amount of a colors compliment to enhance the original hue.

I've always been intrigued by color and have experimented with it, but it wasn't until about fifteen years ago, stumbling onto an amazing source, that the secrets of those hues began opening up to me.  I spent many long hours and months studying and making color charts and complex color wheels.  Learning the difference between warm blues and cool blues, warm reds and cool reds, warm yellows and cool yellows, made all the difference in the world!

I teach my students how to make their own color wheel.  I love to see when the light goes on and they understand what it's all about.  Realizing how to mix color without having it turn to mud, knowing how to tone down a color without using black, and knowing how to choose the right colors for a painting, is a game changer!  - Jill Saur - Jill Saur Fine Art

"Those who do not move, do not notice their chains." - Rosa Luxemburg

I've been working on a very challenging painting this week.  Every time I put my canvas on my easel and pick up my brush, I feel a little paralyzed and chained.  But, when I start moving my brush around the tough areas of the composition, the chains eventually turn into silk threads and I'm seeing something beautiful unfold.  The journey of an artist's life is not without difficulties, but nothing worth achieving is ever easy.  - Jill Saur

Below, please enjoy these photos of my students.  It's been a true joy to have a window into their world and watch them create such beautiful works of art!

Brush Cleaner For Art Brushes

Up until now, I've been using a popular brush soap to clean my brushes.  I read an article about this Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer and decided to give it a try.

I took eighteen brushes that I had cleaned with brush soap for the duration of their use.  Over a period of time, the paint at the base of the brush (that my brush soap didn't remove) hardened the bristles.  I soaked them in Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner & Restorer.  This product is for brushes that have been used with acrylic and oil paint.  Look at the color of the restorer brush liquid that was dislodged from the brushes!

This $11.00 bottle of cleaner and restorer has saved approximately $600.00 worth of brushes!  Amazing!  Be sure to read the directions on the back of the bottle do determine how long you'll need to soak your brushes.

Dick Blick Art Materials carries this product.  I know you can also find it at other fine art stores.

"If you hear a voice within you say, 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." - Vincent Van Gogh

I love that quote by Van Gogh.  The only way to silence that voice from within that tells you that you can't do something is to do it.  I think it breaks a huge barrier and opens up the door to new breakthroughs for an artist.
