 Martin Glaser, a legendary New York graphic designer, famous for creating the ‘I Love New York’ logo, recently spoke about something that’s dear to my heart.  Martin said, “If you can sustain your interest in what you’re doing, you’re an extremely fortunate person.  What you see very frequently in people’s professional lives, and perhaps in their emotional life as well, is that they lose interest in the third act.  You sort of get tired, and indifferent, and sometimes, defensive and you kind of lose your capacity for astonishment, and that’s a great loss, because the world is a very astonishing place.”

Most of my clients lead very busy lives, are professional businessmen and women, own businesses and some are taking care of large families.  I also stay very busy with my classes, painting, and the business side of what I do.  It takes determination to stop and re-charge the creative side, but it's vitally important.

I’m in the third act of my life and  I still find wonder in observing nature, seeing the cloud formations before a storm, and getting up early to watch the sunrise over the misty waters of the Chattahoochee River. 

I agree with Martin Glaser, the world is a very astonishing place and I hope you're able to take the necessary time to be utterly astonished too!

Were so used to flipping through channels on our televisions and scanning through messages and emails on our phones that we've become a society of scanners rather than lookers.  

One of the beautiful things about creating art is that it causes you to stop, really stop to connect with your surroundings and creativity.  For me, it's a spiritual experience. When I listen to that still small voice within that guides and directs me, the outcome is always so much better.

Fine Art Painting Classes In Roswell, GA.

This post is originally from 2016.  I love to revisit the works of my awesome students.

 "The tantalizing discomfort of perplexity is what inspires otherwise ordinary men and women to extraordinary feats of ingenuity and creativity; nothing quite focuses the mind like dissonant details awaiting harmonious resolution." - Brian Greene

What struck me about this quote is that one must be comfortable with dissonance in order to let harmony make its way to the surface.  Sometimes it's the paintings that I struggle with the most that turn out the best.  If I gave up midway in the midst of my frustration, some of my greatest works would never have come to fruition.

Fine Art Painting Classes In Roswell, GA.

When I started this 36"x48" acrylic painting, the drawing was a feat in itself.  I experimented with layering the colors over dark and light backgrounds.  I gained an incredible amount of knowledge doing something that I've never done before (I always do).  I don't regret a minute of this journey.  I titled my painting, "Noble Encounter".  It hangs in the home of a very special client.

Drawing and painting has always been and continues to be a tremendous source of therapy for me. The following words are from something I wrote on my website:

"I love what painting teaches me about life, and I love what life teaches me about painting.  I love that I can paint what I feel, and I especially love how I feel when I paint.

I love that the painting experience lightens pain, and gives wings of flight to fettered human limitations.

I love the way painting causes me to look to a source greater than myself for inspiration and guidance.  

I love knowing that although I cannot sing with my voice, my paintings are like a song that will resonate through the years, even after I’m gone.

 SELECTING A COMPOSITION IN ART

The following quote is by by Edgar Payne: 

"Beginners often make the mistake of selecting views that would tax the ability of the more experienced artists.  The experienced painter may be able to handle very complicated views.  However, if there be commandments to the beginners, the first one should be that he select the simple arrangements.  It takes very little of the view to make an extremely large picture.  Large simple masses are convincing; they have distinct attraction and immediately call attention to the picture.  Much study, practice and fine pictorial compositions can be gained from a few masses, values, lines, and color.  For instance, in marine painting, it is surprising how a large rock, a cliff, and perhaps a small glimpse of sea, can make an imposing canvas.  A large wave, few smaller ones, with possibly a rock or two, and a bit of land is also enough to create a fine painting." - Edgar Payne

Art instruction books can be highly beneficial.  However, the only problem is that the majority of them are not written for beginners (even though they say they are).  The paintings in most books are very complicated and serve well to show off the expertise of the author, but it often makes it very difficult for the beginner artist to follow along.

Art Classes For Teens in Roswell, GA.

I'm re-sharing this older post to convey that I teach drawing and painting lessons to teens.  If you have a teen interested in art, please visit my website and read what my students have to say about taking art classes with me.

Three years ago:  Christopher started taking classes with me toward the end of his seventh grade year. This week, he graduated from high school and will be moving and continuing his education. Our class had a great time last night, enjoying pizza and some good laughs.

The first two photos are of Christopher and his current work. We looked back over my class blog together picking out some of his early works and different hair phases! I'll miss seeing Christopher but he assures me that he'll be back in the future and he'll stay in touch along the way. He's truly a fine young man.
