Painting Tip

Not sure how to proceed in a painting with the placement of objects?  In most instances, you can make sketches ahead of time, but there are those paintings that sketches don't entirely help with.

One of my students is working on a big palette knife painting.  When you're working with a lot of texture, it's very messy to remove paint and you certainly can't paint over it.

After a certain amount of flowers were already added to her painting, my student wasn't sure where to add more blue flowers.  I told her to draw the basic shapes of her flowers on her drawing pad, paint them blue, and cut them out.  Then, put double sided tape on the back of the flowers and place them in different areas of the painting until she ended up with a design that she liked.

With her permission, I'm showing you progress photos of her painting.  You can see how she laid out the paper flowers before actually painting them. This beautiful painting isn't finished.  I'll keep you posted! - Jill Saur

Van Gogh's Letter To Theo: Learning To Draw
It’s more or less the same with drawing as with writing. When one learns to write as a child, one has the feeling that one will never discover how to do it, and it seems to be a miracle when one sees the schoolmaster write so quickly. Nevertheless, in time one grasps it. And I really believe that one must learn to draw in such a way that it’s as easy as writing something down, and that one must master proportion and learn to see in such a way that one can reproduce at will whatever one sees on a larger or smaller scale. - Van Gogh

Palette Preparation

I’m big on the importance of understanding color theory, but equally so, I’m really big on palette preparation before starting a painting.

I have lots of notebooks that I use to test my colors and then when I’ve decided on my palette, I keep records of the colors that I use in each painting.  It comes in handy when a collector tells me they want me to paint a landscape with the same colors in another one of my c paintings.

I’m so proud of my students who take the time to test their colors instead of just jumping into their work, and then becoming disappointed in their results.

Below is a recipe for success. This painting is comprised of just three colors: a red, a yellow, and a blue.  You can mix just about anything from those three primary colors.  You can get beautiful greys, stunning greens, brilliant purples and so on.

I hope this helps you on your painting journey!  Want to receive my blogs in your email?  Please sign up on the right side. - Jill Saur

The beginning of any painting can often feel insurmountable. But, when the painting begins to progress and the mysteries of creativity unfold, a great sense of satisfaction is born. Creativity takes courage.
