Watercolor Master, Eliot O'Hara

Eliot O'Hara
(1890-1961), Maine Seaside Town in Early Morning Fog, 1927, watercolor

My mother, Sandra Pope, had the opportunity to study with American Watercolorist,  Eliot O'Hara before he passed away in 1961.  He had a tremendous influence on her style and love for painting.  As I study this tree painting by Mr. O'Hara, I can't help but wonder if her soulful tree renderings were inspired by Eliot O'Hara himself!  It's more than likely that his influence on my mother has indirectly impacted my rendering of trees through watching my mother paint!

"O'Hara was one of America's most widely respected watercolorists and teachers. In addition to an extensive exhibition record, he wrote eight books and produced more than 20 films on watercolor technique. His work can be found in more than 60 public collections, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy of Design, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the OMAA". - The Ogunquit Museum of American Art website:

I suppose that we never truly know the ripples that our lives create in the lives of other people.

Art Classes Roswell, Ga.

Unleash Your Creativity

During a demo last week, I told a student to push the envelope when they start to work on their own painting.

The definition for envelope is the flight envelope that covers all the limits for which it’s safe to fly a plane. Test pilots push that envelope to determine how fast and how high new jets can fly.

Simply put, an envelope is something that envelops us.

What envelops us as artists? Is it the fear of failure that a painting might not turn out the way you want it to or the way others expect?  Fear is a joy and creativity killer.  Break through your fear and unleash your creative abilities.

When you sit down to paint, you may not be responsible for your first thought, but you are responsible for your second one. Try saying, “I can do this and it’s going to be beautiful.”  Experiment. Paint outside your own lines.  Unleash your creativity and you’ll discover there’s more to what you can do than you ever imagined. – Jill Saur

Art Classes Roswell, GA.

In order to create a work of art, you must first believe that you can.  Of course, you need the right tools and the knowledge, but you also need to allow yourself space to learn, and that includes failures along the way.

I remember when I was a beginning art student.  Every failure on the paper stared back at me revealing my inadequacies.  However, every success strengthened and encouraged me. I chose to let the successes spur me on because I realized that I could express my thoughts and feelings through the intoxicating medium of paint.  Without perseverance, I would have never gotten through those beginning years.  The best lesson  you can learn from me is to never give up! - Jill Saur

Please enjoy these beautiful works and works in progress by my wonderful students to whom I am eternally grateful for the joy they bring into my life!

Art Classes Roswell GA.

Since I last wrote about this tote, a number of my students have purchased this Pittman Field Bag and THEY LOVE IT!  I'm posting this for my new students who are looking for a good overall bag to carry their art supplies in.  And, best of all, this holds the Masterson Art Palette!  Enjoy!

ART TOTE BAG:  This is the Pittman Field Bag.  It's made by Jerry's Artarama.  The Masterson Palette fits in a compartment under the bag!!!!  The bag is large enough to accommodate paint, brushes, palette, paper towels and lots of other things.  If you order it, be sure to just order the bag.  There is another price for the bag and a watercolor palette and that's more expensive.
