Reasons To Learn To Paint By Jill Saur

 My Studio

When I attended art school, I was in awe of the students from Russia.  They had extensive training in art from the time they were young children.  They were incredible! Their country, and others like them, placed a tremendous emphasis on the importance of learning to draw and paint.

It's my hope that America shifts back to placing an emphasis on training in the arts. The following reasons explain my argument for learning to draw and paint.  These benefits apply to individuals of all ages.  Thanks for reading!

 1.   Painting stimulates the brain and helps develop problem-solving skills.

 2.   Painting builds a keener sense of perception, helping you to make better decisions.

 3.   Learning to paint engages the senses.

 4.   Painting helps you relax.

 5.   Painting stimulates creativity.

 6.   Painting helps develop individuality and independence.

 7.   Painting helps to build self-esteem.

 8.   Painting gives you a sense of well-being.

 9.   Painting generates enjoyment.

 10.  Painting promotes self-expression.

 11.  Painting promotes abstract thinking.

 12.  Painting gives you a feeling of accomplishment.

 13.  Painting promotes non-verbal communication skills.

 14.  Painting is exhilarating.

 15.  Painting teaches us more about ourselves than we imagined.

"You must have chaos within you to give birth to a dancing star." - Friedrich Nietzsche

There's so much chaos in this world.  It's bound to effect us.  If what Friedrich Nietzsche said is true, we must all have a lot of dancing stars within us!  I know my students do.  Please enjoy these recent works and works in progress by my fabulous students.  Click on any students photo to enlarge it.

"The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again."  William Faulkner

I randomly chose photos of former and current students works of art, to allow them to move again, a fitting gesture for the quote by William Faulkner.  Looking at my students' work always puts a smile on my face.  Enjoy!

SELECTION AND COMPOSITION

The following quote is by by Edgar Payne and is well worth noting:

"Beginners often make the mistake of selecting views that would tax the ability of the more experienced artists.  At one time or another every noted painter learns the value of complicity in selecting.  The sooner the student learns this important fact, the better off he is.  The experienced painter may be able to handle very complicated views.  However, if there be commandments to the beginners, the first one should be that he select the simple arrangements.  It takes very little of the view to make an extremely large picture.  Large simple masses are convincing; they have distinct attraction and immediately call attention to the picture.  Much study, practice and fine pictorial compositions can be gained from a few masses, values, lines, and color.  For instance, in marine painting, it is surprising how a large rock, a cliff, and perhaps a small glimpse of sea, can make an imposing canvas.  A large wave, few smaller ones, with possibly a rock or two, and a bit of land is also enough to create a fine painting." - Edgar Payne

Art instruction books can be highly beneficial.  However, the only problem is that the majority of them are not written for beginners (even though they say they are).  The paintings in most books are very complicated and serve well to show off the expertise of the author but it often makes it very difficult for the beginner artist to follow along.

If you're new to painting and want to learn to paint landscapes, why not do a study on skies first.  If you work on the individual elements first, you'll feel a lot more comfortable about putting all of the elements together.

"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." Vincent Van Gogh

If you wanted to build more muscle mass, you'd join a gym and start lifting weights.  Can you imagine going your first day and walking out looking like Aqua Man?  Of course not!

The same is true with becoming a good artist.  It takes time to train your eye to see what you're truly looking at and cultivate what's in your imagination.  Nobody sits down at an easel for the first time and paints a masterpiece!

Van Gogh became proficient at drawing before he began painting.  Over the course of his short life, he completed over a thousand drawings!  No wonder he said that great things are done by a series of small things brought together!
