I love Van Gogh.  As promised in class, I am providing the link to a museum that evaluates one of his paintings.  This is in regards to Van Gogh's form and technique.  Enjoy!

Charcoal Sketch by Jill Saur

It's hard for me to go most anywhere without a sketchbook for that 'just in case' moment.  Drawing, gesturing with a pen, and using charcoal, are just a few of the things I do when I am outside my studio.

I highly recommend keeping a small sketchbook for those waiting rooms at the doctors office and terminals at the airport!  You never know what you might come up with!

Sunflowers by Jill Saur

Color is beguiling.  Black and white is mystifying.  I took this photo the other day and find its beauty haunting.  I believe an artist should always be looking for something fresh to inspire them.  I may never paint sunflowers in black and white, but the impact of this image will emerge in one of my new works.

Art Classes Roswell GA. (Values on a Sphere)

I often talk to my students about value.  When you look at this sphere below, you can see there are so many more shadows and highlights than meets the eye.  For those serious students, I would take the time to draw this with your fine pencils.  The highlight is where the light hits the sphere.  Transitional light is the middle value from light to dark.  The core of the shadow is the area on the sphere that is the furthest from the light.  The reflected light is the area that is reflecting the light from the table.  And, the cast shadow is the shadow that the sphere is casting onto the table.

Accomplished artists understand how to use value changes in their paintings.  It creates the illusion of three dimensions on a one dimensional surface.  Please take the time to draw this and you will learn so much!  My website:  CLICK HERE

Andrew Wyeth

Andrew Wyeth is one of the most revered American artists and is certainly one of my favorites!  I had hoped to meet him before he passed away, but the opportunity did not present itself.

I have read a number of biographies on this disciplined, talented and mysterious man.  When I was in art school, I wrote a paper on him and delivered an oral presentation to a group of students who had no idea
of the genius of this man.

I am most impressed by Andrew Wyeth's early life and artistic discipline as a young boy, when he would draw from real life, and study with his father, N.C. Wyeth,  a well-known illustrator.  Andrew and his father would roam the fields and bring in the bones and carcasses of deceased wild animals for Andrew to study and draw.

I love that Andrew Wyeth puts so much feeling into his work, and it shows with his brilliant imagery,
texture, and subject matter.  Andrew Wyeth was given free reign to enter his neighbors homes and paint them even while they were asleep!  One of my favorite paintings is the third one below.  Andrew captured a long time friend while he was asleep, and it is fraught with feeling!

I will never forget one of Andrew Wyeth's practices.  He didn't show his work to anyone before it was completed because he felt he would lose the power with which he painted it.  Andrew didn't want to be more concerned about someones reaction than his own intentions.

Though my work is entirely different than Andrew Wyeth, he has forever impacted me as an artist.  I never start a new endeavor without feeling a passion for what I am painting.  I think about what I want to convey and I put all that I have into it.

I am thankful for the life of this man and the legacy he has left behind.  - Jill Saur

Students Work (Art Classes Roswell, GA)

All of a sudden we have gone from Spring to a very hot summer.  I love the change of seasons.  I think it adds diversity and change to our lives and often sets us on a new path.  Often, the change of season can bring on new inspiration for ideas to paint.

Here are some recent completed works from my students.  Kudos to my students who once again have done a magnificent job! - Jill

Crescent Beach Waves by Jill Saur

My morning devotion by Sarah Young begins with these words:  "IN A WORLD of unrelenting changes, I am the One who never changes.  I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.  Find in Me the stability for which you have yearned.

When I was at the beach last week, I spent a lot of time enjoying, observing, and photographing the waves.  I thought about how since the beginning of time, there are no two waves that have crashed upon the shore exactly the same.  Each wave is unique, yet it is composed of the same substance.  So it is in our lives.  We all have different compelling circumstances, yet we all feel the same pain, sadness and joy.

When I observe nature, I can't help but marvel at God's creativity and brilliant allure.  I suppose I love the ocean so much because I took great solace from the sea as a young girl going through life's difficult changes.  I am happy to have had the time to feel that same renewal once again.  I look forward to the paintings that will emerge from my soul onto the canvas as a result of this trip.

To my students, I recommend making a point to truly study what you are passionate about.  Your paintings will be so much richer and your journey more rewarding.
