I often talk to my students about value. When you look at this sphere below, you can see there are so many more shadows and highlights than meets the eye. For those serious students, I would take the time to draw this with your fine pencils. The highlight is where the light hits the sphere. Transitional light is the middle value from light to dark. The core of the shadow is the area on the sphere that is the furthest from the light. The reflected light is the area that is reflecting the light from the table. And, the cast shadow is the shadow that the sphere is casting onto the table.
Accomplished artists understand how to use value changes in their paintings. It creates the illusion of three dimensions on a one dimensional surface. Please take the time to draw this and you will learn so much! My website:
