Vincent Van Gogh's Birthday by Jill Saur

Vincent Van Gogh 1853-1990

Vincent Van Gogh By Jill Saur

Born on March 30th, 1853, Van Gogh created over 2,000 works of art on canvas and paper.  He only sold one painting in his entire life and yet he is one of the most recognized artists of all time!

He is a man that, against all odds, produced an incredible legacy in a short period of time.  Van Gogh didn't start painting until he was in his early twenties and he died when he was only thirty-seven!  His brother, Theo, was so grief stricken at the loss Vincent that his own health declined and he died a year later.

No artist has had the single most effect on my later years as an artist as Vincent Van Gogh has.  His knowledge and use of color was so profoundly understated that I don't think the majority of the general public realize what a true genius he was.  His use of complimentary colors and their tints and tones still amaze me to this day.

Van Gogh broke out of the mold of the traditional painters.  His free flowing lines, bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, delight viewers to this day.  Happy Birthday, Vincent!

"To suffer without complaint is the only lesson we have to learn in this life." - Van Gogh*
Van Gogh had a heart for those who were poor and suffering and especially those who were doing manual labor in the fields.  He portrayed this woman with the utmost of dignity.  The green colors he used represent pride, serenity, and fertility.  The movement in his brushstrokes are sublime!

One of my students told me that she was recently traveling on a business trip and had an opportunity to see some of Van Gogh's paintings in an exhibit.  She said that she has a new found appreciation for his work.  That made me smile!  - Jill Saur

"Albert Bierstadt" By Jill Saur

Albert Bierstadt Painting
Albert Bierstadt was born in Germany in 1830 and grew up in America.  He was a prolific artist who painted the West but who also joined a group of artists in New York, known as the Hudson River School.  These artists traveled up and down the Hudson River and painted breathtaking scenes with a luminous glow.  Bierstadt is often categorized as a Luminist Painter.

Of all his paintings, “Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains” is one of my favorites.  It measures 72”x120”.  This is an enormous work of art!

Albert Bierstadt was a master artist.  After studying his work, I would venture to that he was a student of “seeing” and of life itself.  He was dedicated, passionate, and he saw his work through to completion.  I would say that long ago, the student became the teacher.

"I Never Give UP" By Jill Saur

"I Never Give Up" By Jill Saur

For me, there are three types of paintings that end with success.  In each case,  I never give up!
1.  The first type of painting is the one that flows effortlessly. It’s like a fine tuned symphony producing beautiful music.  I suppose it's like catching the "perfect wave" and riding it all the way to the shore.  However, even the perfect wave has obstacles and requires endurance.   I never give up!
2.  The second type of painting is the one that I wrestle with.  I find myself having to paint over certain areas again and again.  Actually, the ones I struggle with lead to new discoveries and results that surprise me.  They afford an opportunity for growth.  This struggle reminds me of the grain of sand in the oyster.  The oyster takes the annoying grain of sand and spins a beautiful pearl.  Some of my best works have resulted from these paintings.  I never give up!
3.  The third type of painting is the one that throws me out of my “comfort zone”.  Oh, but that's where the opportunity for greatness really happens!  I look to my Creator for new and exciting ideas.  That’s when my a painting becomes a rhythmic tango that I engage in with brush, paint, and spirit.  It’s always a beautiful dance.  I never give up!
